United Britain? Great Kingdom? Engireland?

Even though I know better, I still tend to get this stuff wrong in normal conversation.

I’ll try harder, England. I mean, Great Britain. I mean, UK. Dammit!

I actually know this surprisingly well. I learned that it was the "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland" 50 years ago, and now it's stuck. If Scotland ever decided to secede, I'd be screwed.

Throw in The Isle of Man or the Channel Islands and all bets are off.

I learned this the hard way when I first went to England way back in the way back. My Brit friends were quick to correct me though. I also learned (the hard way) about suspenders and knickers. To me, those were things that held pants up and knee pants. And don't even get me started on how embarrassed I was when at a Chinese restaurant one night I asked for a napkin and my friends nearly spewed their wine all over the table…

    …And then there's "The Commonwealth…" 🙂

Being a Brit, I can tell you many people get this confused, I once had a conversation with a fellow Brit about what is Britain. Hard work, I think perhaps the U.K is one of the last places on the planet to have so many local modern day tribes. Consider the Shetlands, Isle of Man, Jersey etc oh man.
