Here at Casa Jaquandor we have not had cable teevee for almost eight years; “rabbit ears” have been sufficient for our needs. Aside from the occasional Food Network show, I’ve really not missed cable all that much. But then I read this xkcd installment, and, finding it amusing but wondering what it means, follow the link at the top of the page, I find what is surely the greatest commercial in teevee history. I don’t remember a single commercial that filled me with more desire to buy what’s being sold than this one. I’m serious, I’ve got a MONSTER hankeringDown the rabbit hole….

Oh, wow. Wow, wow, wow. And oh yeah, WOW! That’s the Phoenix lander that just arrived on Mars the other day — in the process of descent, via its parachute; you can even make out the tether lines. It’s things like this that make me think that with everything else going wrong, we’re still doing amazing things and getting things right and moving, ever so slowly, into the future. As Phil Plait writes: Think on this, and think on it carefully: you are seeing a manmade object falling gracefully and with intent to the surface of an alien world, asDown the rabbit hole….

Ben Stein holds forth on the value of science: Love of God and compassion and empathy leads you to a very glorious place, and science leads you to killing people. Can this be true? Has science directly led to death and slaughter? Has science done this in itself and by itself? Did Auschwitz happen because of science? The very claim, put that way, sounds utterly ludicrous, probably because it is utterly ludicrous. The Holocaust didn’t happen because a dispassionate search for the nature of things, carried out by trial and error, led the Nazis to the inescapable empirical conclusion thatDown the rabbit hole….

Check out the cool photo Jason posted the other day: it’s the Thunderbirds (the USAF’s precision flying squad) doing a flyover of the launch pad of the Kennedy Space Center, with the shuttle on the pad. It’s a great shot. (I did have to ask Jason for clarification as to why the boosters and fuel tank are visible but the orbiter itself is not, and as he explains in comments: It’s there, it’s just hidden by the big gantry to the left of the main fuel tank and solid rocket booster. It encloses the shuttle as it sits on theDown the rabbit hole….

Oh, my God. And looking at Sherri Shepherd’s website, I find this quote: To those of you who prayed… let me tell you … PRAYERS WORK! Because it is a miracle of God that I am now a co-host on The View. What an appalling sentiment. What a cheap, lazy, and boring view of God she must have. This kind of crap makes me want to vomit. What kind of nauseatingly simpleton must God be under this view, to use His omnipotent powers to pick the host of a damn teevee show?! (via) Share This PostDown the rabbit hole….

The Sun isn’t causing global warming. Of course, none of this matters because there’s one glacier that’s getting bigger and Al Gore doesn’t live in a cave. (Via) Share This PostDown the rabbit hole….

Utterly stunning. It’s a computer application demo that makes me think that we’re not 300 years away from Star Trek‘s library computer, but 47 months or so. I can’t believe the stuff they can do. Via Shamus. Share This PostDown the rabbit hole….

In a roundabout way, John Scalzi is raising money for some organization that works for the separation of church and state. What he’s doing is pledging that if he raises at least $250 by the end of this week, he’ll go to that new Creationist Museum that’s apparently quite near where he lives and blog about it afterwards (and he’ll donate all the money he raises to the organization he describes). Personally, I think that if he raises over $2,000, he should have to purchase a T-shirt from that museum’s gift shop and then wear it for one whole dayDown the rabbit hole….
