  1. Shawshank – Darabont fought the studio tooth and nail for the ending you want, but lost the argument. The studio insisted that the audience NEEDED to see that resolution, that without it they would have revolted. And I think they were right.

Star Wars – Just finished Death Star, a very fun book that takes a look at a cast of Death Star inhabitants during final construction and beyond. Very well-done, and recommended.

  2. Your #1 and #2 will be on my top 15 for sure, maybe your #8 as well. (When I do it in 2010.)

  3. I can’t complain about your top two choices, as they are mine as well!

I, however, refuse to give into that “Episode IV: A New Hope” nonsense; the movie I saw back in ’77 was called simply Star Wars, and that’s how it’ll always be for me. But then I’m an old grump… 🙂

  4. great series, Jaq. ESB is my favorite Star Wars film. as Jason Streed once quipped: they’re unencumbered by the need to blow up the Death Star 😉

also love Casablanca and LotR from this list.

  5. In Cssablanca, the letters of transit were signed by Vichy General Weygand, not Free French General de Gaulle. Listen to the soundtrack carefully.

  6. Ah, Star Wars. I remember back in the day when we used to brag about how many times we saw it (and planned more). It was at the theater forever. Those were the days.
