If we ditch Columbus Day, what should be celebrated in its stead? (Assuming that we keep some kind of Federal holiday in October. )

Seattle already has Indigenous People's Day. I like that. Hope it catches on.
Pavarotti was born on October 12th. How about Pavarotti day?
Yes, I'm just being a smartass. Indigenous People's Day sounds fine to me. Good idea.
By the way, useful site…

Indigenous People's Day is fine with me, but cities with large Italian populations wll have a fit.
I'd rather not have a holiday in October as it makes it easier for my spouse to get time off.
Somewhere along the line we decided that military personnel where to be embraced with unconditional acceptance and a reverence previously reserved for the likes of Ghandi and St. Francis.
The quiet reservation regarding soldiers that has been a hallmark of reasonable people throughout the history of mankind, has given way to a new era of soldier-thine-is-our- moral- compass.
Elected officials are especially prone to gush at the mere mention of "former marine". "veteran owned" is a new business slogan. Who can resist the soldier showing up at the preschool to a reception of squealing children? Heck, even mortgage companies are hugging it out on tv with teary eyed soldiers closing a home via skype while dutifully serving our country in the heathen filled desert. And who could question the motives of a mortgage company?
So I say we replace Columbus Day, if we must, with recruitment day. Make it a federal holiday but keep the schools open and mandate the presence of military recruitment officials at high schools across the country.
Put on plays titled, "me and my full metal jacket" or "johnny was unemployed THEN he became a hero"
Quince – I do think the reverence for the military was an overreaction to what happened to the Vietnam vets, which was NOT reverent, unlike the WWII vet.
There needs to be a "PRINCESS IN SPACE' day!!!!!!!
How about something non-controversial like Fall Foliage Day – an extra day off just to look at the fall leaves.
I vote for Jaquandor Day, on which we all let our hair down, wear coveralls, read wonderful books, listen to symphonies and dodge whipped topping pies.
Lynn: I'm with you all the way up to dodging pies. So help me, if there's ever a day in my honor and someone dodges a pie…! No no no! A pie comes at you, you wear that shit with pride! 🙂
