Your assumption is that socialized or government-provided healthcare would fix this issue, but in actuality it would be exactly the same. No socialized healthcare system can provide every possible service to every person. Someone will have to make the decision as to what services will be paid for by the government. The risk of further socializing our current system is that it may force people of means to no longer have the option to purchase healthcare not provided to them.
This is exactly the situation described in the article. The couple is already relying on government-provided services which are being cut due to lack of funding. That situation won’t change with an all-government healthcare system, it will get worse as then the diseases with the largest lobbying groups will get the most funding.
Beats the heck out of me.
There was an episodeof Scrubs a few weeks back. a man claimed to have MS, but the doctors figured he was faking and reamed him out. Until they realized that the man’s daughter had symptoms of MS. He had insurance; she didn’t. They continued to “treat” him.
The moral ambiguity struck me. The doctors and patients were gaming the system, misrepresenting (OK, lying about) a condition. Yet rather than being appalled, I was cheering them on for their compassion.
