The Final Victory of JR Ewing, and other thoughts on one year of Trump
One year ago today the American people, by virtue of the country’s very odd system of voting for President, committed what might wind up being known as the greatest act of electoral malpractice in the country’s history. I. Donald Trump ran a cynical, mean-spirited campaign that was almost perfectly designed to appeal to the id of every angry white voter in this country. He was the perfect candidate at the perfect time for a party that had been trending this way for decades. Many prominent Republicans have started to notice the rot at the heart of their party, but evenDown the rabbit hole….
Something for Friday: Farewell, Cassini
The Cassini mission has ended with the space probe’s final plunge into the Saturnian atmosphere. We learned a great deal from Cassini — and we will continue to do so as more and more analysis of its data is done — and I find it somewhat of a bright moment in a world where science itself is being deeply undervalued at precisely the time when we need good science most. Thank you, Cassini. Share This PostDown the rabbit hole….
Sixteen years….
I wrote this story not long after the events of 9-11-01. It is not the story I would write today. How could it be? I was on the cusp of turning thirty, and at that point the scope of an attack of that magnitude was nearly impossible to process. The City of Dead Works There is never any rest for me, the Ferryman of the Dead. I pole my barge across the black waters and up to the pier. So many wait this time, many more than usual. I wonder what has happened, what event has sent me this many.Down the rabbit hole….
On Immigration
As His Malevlonece, Mr. Trump, the President, is preparing to enforce an immigration policy that only a person who thinks that America is at its best a “Whites Only” club could love, here are my thoughts on immigration. I believe that our nation’s immigration policy should make it easier, not harder, for the peoples of the world to come here. To work here. To learn here. To raise families here. To find safety and shelter here. To live here. To practice their religions here. To continue to do as immigrants have always done: enrich the country and make it wiserDown the rabbit hole….
2017: Year of the American Nazis
I don’t have anything eloquent or insightful to say on the subject, but I feel that I should say this: to hell with the white-supremacist Nazi subculture that is thriving in my country today, and to hell with anyone who either supports them directly or offers them de facto shadow support by offering arguments like “Sad about what happened but Antifa is worse”, to hell with a major political party that decided that its ensconcement in power was a sufficiently worthy goal to ally with such people, and to hell with a moral midget of a President whose election isDown the rabbit hole….

Two Hundred Forty One
I’m not going to lie, folks: it feels different this year. But this is still America and it’s still my home. Happy Birthday, America. (Even if my current relationship status with you is set to "It's complicated.") — Kelly Sedinger (@Jaquandor) July 4, 2017 It is complicated. Obviously in a country this size we’re never all going to be on the same page. Heck, even if the country totaled 200 people, we wouldn’t all be on the same page. But the size of the disconnect right now is pretty staggering and more than a little daunting, in terms of theDown the rabbit hole….
Larry Havers, 1946-1967
Fourteen years ago I wrote the following on Memorial Day, and I wanted to revisit it. It’s about the Vietnam Veteran whose name I remember, despite the fact that I had no relation to him and clearly never knew him, because he was killed four years before I was born. Memorial Day, for all its solemnity, has for me always been something of a distant holiday, because no one close to me has ever fallen in war, and in fact I have to look pretty far for relatives who have even served in wartime. Both of my grandfathers fought inDown the rabbit hole….
