Oops, wrong thing set in the South Pacific. Jason Bennion reminds me of a show I really liked as a kid, Tales of the Gold Monkey. This was a high-adventure pulp show that aired in the 1982-1983 season on ABC, undoubtedly greenlighted in light of the smash 1981 box office success of Raiders of the Lost Ark. However, Gold Monkey wasn’t a mere Raiders knock-off, any more than Battlestar Galactica was a Star Wars rip. Here’s a Gold Monkey website, with plenty of relevant lore for the show (including the citation of a film to which Gold Monkey was farDown the rabbit hole….

OK, folks, I just saw this “Make Your Own Superhero” gizmo over at Aurora Walking Vacation, and I just had to give it a try, using his suggestion of creating a superhero based on myself. Here it is! How about that! Lightning from my right hand, and a blaster in my left; long hair blowing in the wind; some kind of green energy crackling ’round my Eyes Of Hot Instant Death; nifty wristguards that may or may not have extra powers within them; and on my feet, Rollerblades of LightSpeed! Note the battle scars on my powerfully-muscled arms, and theDown the rabbit hole….

Games as Art

I recall a while back reading Demosthenes take on Roger Ebert’s contention that video games may display a lot of craft, but they’re not art: I am prepared to believe that video games can be elegant, subtle, sophisticated, challenging and visually wonderful. But I believe the nature of the medium prevents it from moving beyond craftsmanship to the stature of art. To my knowledge, no one in or out of the field has ever been able to cite a game worthy of comparison with the great dramatists, poets, filmmakers, novelists and composers. That a game can aspire to artistic importanceDown the rabbit hole….

Mahna Mahna!

Longtime readers will remember my unreasoning love of the Greatest Thing to Ever Feature Muppets Ever, the classic nonsense tune “Mahna Mahna!”. The Muppet Show version, as ever, can be seen here. However, I always knew that the song was actually heard several years earlier, on Sesame Street, which in its elder days used to feature some niftily surreal stuff — i.e., the show wasn’t “All Elmo, All The Time”. Here’s the original “Mahna Mahna”. I still prefer the Muppet Show version, as it distills the song down and shows off the significant growth in the understanding of “Muppet BodyDown the rabbit hole….

The New Space Opera, originally uploaded by Jonathan Strahan. That cover sets the bar pretty high, eh? I like my SF with BIG EFFIN’ STARSHIPS. So that cover indicates BIG EFFIN’ STARSHIPS. For no real reason, I think there should be a selection online of the greatest advice ever given in the movies or TV shows. Hence this post. I’ll start listing some as they come to me, and feel free to add some in comments — I’ll update as needed. (These will of necessity be in no particular order.) 1. “Try not! Do, or do not. There is no ‘try’.” (The Empire Strikes Back) 2. “Don’t tug on that! You never know what it might be attached to.” (The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the Eighth Dimension) 3. “Don’t drink itDown the rabbit hole….

JLB for President!

Jayme Lynn Blaschke has announced his candidacy for the SFWA. His platform seems interesting, but I must acknowledge that I have no dog in this fight, since I’m not a member of the SFWA and I doubt I’ll bother joining if and/or when I become a published writer. Consider yourself warned, John Scalzi! UPDATE: Having read JLB’s platform again, I declare myself solidly behind him. Now to start making campaign posters, and lining up hands for him to kiss and babies for him to shake…or is that the other way around…hmmm…. Share This PostDown the rabbit hole….

A query for techies….

I’ve been experimenting a bit with this newfangled BitTorrent thingie, and I have a question for the techno-inclined: What do I do with KVCD files, and how to I convert them into something that is, er, watchable? (Yes, I have Googled this, but none of what I’ve found makes sense to me. I need someone to spell it out. Slowly. Maybe even with pictures. In crayon.) UPDATE: After some info thrown my way by Mary, and after some subsequent tinkering around based on that info, I figured out what to do. Thanks, Mary! Share This PostDown the rabbit hole….

There seem to be two types of bloggers: those who cheerfully do “What kind of X are you” quizzes, and those who will do them but only with the proviso that they rarely do those kinds of quizzes. I’m in the latter camp; I rarely do these kinds of quizzes, but anyway, here are the results of the one I just did: What Be Your Nerd Type? Graphically speaking

I’ve been reading quite a few graphic novels of late, and I have some more in the “to read” stack, seeing as how the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library actually stocks them to a nice degree. (If you live in or near a locality with a large public library system and you’re interested in graphic novels, give this route a try. I firmly believe that one big reason that graphic novels are seemingly forever stuck in that “on the brink” phase, where people are constantly saying things like “Hey, these aren’t the funny books you grew up with!”, isDown the rabbit hole….
