Anyway, when last we left, Palpatine had engineered Anakin Skywalker’s elevation to the Jedi Council, but the Council, angered at Palpatine’s machinations, denied him the traditional promotion to Jedi Master that usually is part and parcel of a seat on the Council. Anakin is then asked to report to the Council on the Chancellor’s dealings, which he is not comfortable doing. Then Palpatine revealed to the Jedi the location of General Grievous, forcing them to take action; he suggests that AnakinDown the rabbit hole….

SF author Iain M. Banks has announced that he has terminal cancer and is unlikely to live more than a year. This is insanely sad. I’ve only read two of his books, and loved both. Time to read more, I suppose. Share This PostDown the rabbit hole….

I saw these two images on Tumblr yesterday, and both put me in mind of Princesses In SPACE!!! (not the actual title). The first seems like an actual possible location from the book, so I’ll keep this in mind: This one doesn’t fit anything specific from the book(s) at all, but it does convey, to me at least, a bit of the sense of adventure that I’m trying to partly capture with these stories. The first image is sourced on Tumblr to here, and the second, to here. Share This PostDown the rabbit hole….

2010 is a fairly odd film, all things considered. It harks back to when Hollywood’s mania for sequels was just starting to get underway, and when the idea of reboots was still way off. And the idea of making sequels to films that were nearly twenty years old? And to films that are considered classics? Yup, it’s strange that this project ever got off the ground, even with a pretty decent Arthur C. Clarke novel to go by. But off the ground 2010 got, providing some answers for the extremely enigmatic 2001: A Space Odyssey. Some would claim that theDown the rabbit hole….

previously: five four three two one OK, time to dive straight back in. Huzzah!!! When last we left off, the various forces in Anakin Skywalker’s life were starting to use him as a pawn in their own various games. This was starting to have the effects we might expect, as both sides are using Anakin against the other – but Palpatine is doing it more constructively and in a way that is more likely to further his own goals. What always interests me is that of all the adult figures in Anakin’s life after Qui Gon Jinn’s death, the oneDown the rabbit hole….

one two three four Again, it’s been a while since we did this, and I’ve been lax for mainly the same reasons: work on other projects, and the continued calcification of the view that the Prequel Trilogy is utter garbage. It seems that the only way to get commentary about the PT noticed online is to simply find some way to repackage the same, tired, old “The PT sucks and Lucas is a hack!” narrative. But for the sake of completeness, I suppose I should tilt at this windmill until I’m done…which is what I’m going to do. (I’ve alreadyDown the rabbit hole….

A few book notes

Just briefly: :: Cetaganda is the next book up (for me) in Lois McMaster Bujold’s ongoing saga of the adventures of Miles Vorkosigan, and as usual, a fine book indeed, full of politics and intrigue and adventure as our Miles gets embroiled in the internal politics of the Cetagandan Empire, and drags his poor best friend, Ivan Vorpatril, along for the ride. I really enjoy these. I can’t really say a whole lot more than that — these books are just good, character-driven entertainment. At this point in the series, Miles is still pretty young and inexperienced, so it’s funDown the rabbit hole….

(Concluding my repost of this Very Special, but not in the Blossom way, Episode of Firefly.) part one part two part three “Those aren’t toys,” Kaylee said. “Those are agricultural supplies for a new colony. Did you change the job while you were out?” “Seal it back up,” Mal said. “That stuff is perishable, and by breaking the seal, we’ve started the decay process.” The crew stood around, staring at the crate that was supposed to contain toys for the children of the orphanage on Haven but really contained farming seed and fertilizer that had supposedly been destined for Whitefall.Down the rabbit hole….

Deep in the rain forests of South America there is a secret laboratory complex that is devoted to a single project, and the result of that project is a girl named Pia. All of their work has led to the ‘creation’ of Pia, who is the first in what the scientists hope is nothing less than the complete re-engineering of the human species. And what, exactly, is so special about Pia? She is immortal. That’s the background of Jessica Khoury’s wonderful debut novel Origin, in which Khoury explores a host of issues all the while spinning a highly engaging storyDown the rabbit hole….

Continuing my repost of this Very Special (but Not Blossomesque) Episode of Firefly. part two part one “Weapons on the ground!” the voice shouted. “Now!” “Do it,” Mal said. He shot a look at Jayne, whose expression of disgust tended to be indistinguishable from his expression of being about to lose his temper. Slowly, Mal, Zoe and Jayne all laid their guns on the floor. “Put that package on the floor too, preacher,” said the voice. Book put the crate down. “All right, face the crates.” They complied. “Put your hands on your head.” They complied. “Stand on your leftDown the rabbit hole….
