I’m sometimes amused by our replacement of one symbolic tradition with another, smaller symbolic tradition when the old one becomes too much of a bother in our speed-based society. A case in point: I don’t know anybody who roasts a lamb anymore for Easter (if I ever did), but we have the next-best thing: butter on the dinner table that is shaped like a lamb.
