The Beatles Song of the Week: “Don’t Let Me Down”

I’ve written about my fairly new-found admiration for The Beatles a number of times over the last couple of years. The main thing that has captivated me in exploring their music — and I’ve only done this in a cursory way as of yet — is its sheer variety. The Beatles compose and perform in so many different styles, and they’re convincing in each one. The idea for this new series of posts came to me last month, when I was answering a question on Ask Me Anything! August 2010 edition. Basically I’ll pick a Beatles song and write aboutDown the rabbit hole….

Continuing with my answers to questions asked in Ask Me Anything! 2009, I have a set of queries posed by Dave in Rocha, one of the occasional posters at BfloBlog.com, Buffalo’s premier sports blog. Do you buy into the concept of Tor-Buf-Chester? Do you think it can ever be a viable, marketable entity due to the fact that it crosses an international border? Are there other cross-border metro regions like this? A bit of explanation: there’s a pundit out there named Richard Florida who has posited a notion that economic activity in the next, oh, hundred years or so andDown the rabbit hole….

Ask HIM anything! (and some other lazy linkage)

Some things: :: Roger is doing his own Ask Me Anything!. So go and ask him stuff. I’ve just done my duty (especially since he posed the majority of the questions in my own recently-completed Ask Me Anything!). :: John McCain: a foreign policy disaster in the making. :: Lynn links an interview with SF author John C. Wright, a guy who has the best ability to say things well despite being completely wrong since William F. Buckley. I finally lost it when Wright identified Apollo 13 as a “hard SF movie”. I guess being set in space makes itDown the rabbit hole….

Ask Me Anything! (2008 version)

Seeing as how we’re coming up on the sixth anniversary of the birth of this blog, I figured it’s time to play the old game, Ask Me Anything!, in which you, the readers, get to Ask Me Anything!. So, go ahead, in comments, ask away: silly questions, profound questions, brain teaser questions, whatever. Try to trick me into saying something bad about George Lucas (it won’t work), or something nice about Bill Belichick (like that’ll ever happen!). I’ll collect questions for a few days, maybe until Monday or Tuesday, and then I’ll start answering. So, Ask Me Anything! (The lastDown the rabbit hole….

2014: The Highlight Reel

Here’s a brief rundown of 2014 as it flowed by in this space! Before links to specific posts and whatnot, a few notes on some series stuff: I did my traditional Ask Me Anything! games in February and August, and I finally put the whole Fixing the Prequels series to bed, finishing up on Revenge of the Sith. Also, I didn’t blog about movies much, for some reason — probably because I spent a great deal of my writing time this year focused on my own fiction rather than other forms of writing. I do still write about books, butDown the rabbit hole….

What I said, when I said it: the best of 2013!

I think this blog really took a marked shift in focus this year, as it feels like I did a lot less lengthy essay-type writing in this space. I’m guessing this is mainly because I put my focus almost entirely on my fiction work this year, after deciding in 2011 that it was time to stop saying “I hope to be a writer someday” and start saying “I am a writer”. My book and movie writing dropped off substantially, which dismays me a little. It’s not like I wasn’t reading and watching new stuff, but I didn’t write about itDown the rabbit hole….

Continuing the cavalcade of answers to Ask Me Anything! questions. (Entries still welcome, by the way — ask things in comments here!) The Herkmeister (hey, if you don’t mind my asking, what’s with that name? There’s gotta be a story there!) offers a couple of Star Wars questions. So, Disney recently announced it would be making a bunch of stand-alone Star Wars films in addition to a new trilogy. The buzz is that first up will be a movie about Yoda (which is awesome because Yoda), but if it were up to you, which Star Wars character would you likeDown the rabbit hole….

It’s time again for my self-selection of the best stuff I’ve done here this year. Enjoy this trip down memory lane…or ignore it completely! I have no control over what you do, folks! As always, some stuff took place as month-long ‘festivals’ of posting: Ask Me Anything! took place in February and August. In April I participated in a daily blogging challenge called A to Z. And I just made up a new one, Gimme a Title!, which is still ongoing. I think I produced some nice bloggage this year, even if my output was actually down quite a bitDown the rabbit hole….

Thanks for bearing with me, folks…writing the novels is still the priority here, but I do need to get some new stuff up here once in a while, right? So anyway, let’s crank out a few more answers for Ask Me Anything! August ’12. Charlie, who follows me on Twitter, asks: You do a nice job on your blog of listing your favorite Toby moments. What are your favorites for other WW mains? Huh. Interesting question! I’ve made no secret of the fact that I am generally a lot less happy with the work of Aaron Sorkin nowadays, where IDown the rabbit hole….

Continuing to answer queries from Ask Me Anything! August 2011…. Lynn has a couple of good ones: Imagine that Star Wars, Star Trek, and Firefly do not exist. What would be your favorite space opera? Wow, this is a very tough question. Those are some of the big space opera franchises, aren’t they? Without the first two, I’m not sure I even have a deep love of space opera to begin with. And Firefly is just all kinds of great, even if it is a bit uneven at times. I think that my favorite space opera outside of those would be a literaryDown the rabbit hole….
