Sunday Burst of Weird and Awesome

I wasn’t sure I wanted to post this today, but life doesn’t stop and the world won’t keep spinning today, so…oddities and Awesome abound!

:: Ever wonder what your facial features look like when hit by winds of 186 MPH? Well, no, I didn’t either. This guy did, though.

:: I cannot deny for one second that if 2001: A Space Odyssey was made in 2012, this is what its trailer would look like.

That’s about all. More next week! (Maybe. It’s always possible I’ll be too busy to collect links, between Christmas preparations and cranking through The Book.)

Sunday Burst of Weird and Awesome

Oddities and Awesome abound!

:: For serious drinkers, the problem of how to keep the ice from melting too fast in the Scotch has been a thorny one for quite some time. The obvious solution is to minimize the surface area of the ice, which therefore leads one to conclude that the ideal ice shape is the one with the least surface area.

Behold: the ice ball! Apparently in Japan, in order to be a member of their national bartender’s guild, you have to be able to carve an ice ball to order. Wow.

(I’ll just stick with large cubes. A bit of watering down doesn’t bother me all that much.)

:: Speaking of drinking, I indicated some time ago that I was officially adopting the Dark-and-Stormy as my signature drink…as in, if I’m James Bond, the Dark-and-Stormy is my vodka martini (shaken, not stirred). Problem is, I’ve just learned that I’ve been making this ginger beer-and-black rum concoction incorrectly. Here’s how it’s done:

That formulation really does make a better drink.

Dark and Stormy #rum

Sunday Burst of Weird and Awesome

Oddities and Awesome abound!

:: Twenty-two things you’re doing wrong. I disagree on the item about cupcakes, right up front; since we started frequenting a local artisanal joint for all our cupcake needs, I’ve taken to just removing them from the wrapper, putting them on a saucer, and using a fork. A civilized cupcake deserves an elegant form of consumption, not some kind of weird ‘How MacGyver would eat a cupcake’ procedure!

:: Five reasons to kill the filibuster. I hate the filibuster in the Senate. Always have. I thought it was a dumb thing back in 11th grade when I first learned that such a tactic existed, and I’ve never changed my view. Not even when Democrats were using it to block President Bush’s judicial nominations (although, to be fair, their hand was forced into it by repeated Republican changing-of-the-rules regarding judicial nominations). Nice, brief article about how bad, undemocratic, and frankly ahistorical it is.

:: Seen at Tumblr: I’m not sure I want to see Les Miserables as badly now.

Sunday Burst of Weird and Awesome

Oddities and Awesome abound!

:: I’ve written before of my love of flashlights, so I have to admit that I was tempted by Toolmonger’s review of a 400-lumen tactical flashlight. My brightest flashlight at the moment tops out at 225 lumens. Not enough!

:: Bitter dad is bitter. Heavens!

:: Justin F***ing Bieber wore overalls the other day…to meet the Prime Minister of Canada. I’m not sure what the worst part of this is. If I was going to meet the President of the United States, I promise I would not wear overalls. Even I have my limits. And besides…Justin F***ing Bieber. The notion of that talentless little tosser donning overalls makes me want to burn my wardrobe…reminding me of this exchange from Much Ado About Nothing, in which the Messenger in Scene One inquires as to Beatrice’s opinion of Benedick:

MESSENGER: I see, lady, that the gentleman is not in your books.

BEATRICE: No, an’ he were, I would burn my study.

I’m kinda conflicted. On the one hand, maybe Justin F***ing Bieber’s appearance in overalls will spur them to a greater acceptance among the world’s fashionistas…but on the other…nah, you know what? I’m not that conflicted, as I don’t care about what the world’s fashionistas think, and f*** Justin F***ing Bieber, anyway.

Oh well…more oddities and awesome next week!

(Justin F***ing Bieber. Of all the #$*&%^!!….)

:: Here’s a fantastic Wonder Woman illustration (via):

There’s a lot of magnificent Wonder Woman are out there, but one thing I wish is that the costume wasn’t always involving shorts that are so short that Diana might be tempted to don a pair of Daisy Dukes in a moment of modesty.

:: Lynn pointed out a Flickr pool devoted to rural decay. There are a lot of beautiful photos here, some of which are even haunting.

:: According to this video made by a Christian youth ministry group, ‘By the year 2017, 1 in 3 teens will grow up without having experienced the love of God through a cream pie to the face.’ Wow…makes me wonder if I’m doing it wrong!

More next week! Unless, of course, the Internet decides to go an entire week without calling my attention to something either weird or awesome. Hey, it could happen.

Sunday Burst of Weird and Awesome (Halloween edition)

Oddities and Awesome abound…and never more so than around Halloween!

:: Cal had a link a while back that really gave me the willies. It’s a practice I’d read about and then promptly forgotten, because it was creepy and ghoulish and in complete defiance of my usual ability to be able to think along the lines of, “Yeah, while I’m glad we’re not doing that anymore, I can kinda sorta see how someone thought that was a good idea.” We’re talking about the Victorian practice of photographing their dead — and not just taking photos of the dead in their caskets, but elaborately posing their dead, sometimes as if they’re very much alive in the family photo.

:: Cracked.com opines on what they think is the scariest book ever written. I’ve never read this…don’t even recall ever seeing it. Maybe I’ll look into it one of these days.

:: Want some spooky classical and film music? Sure you do!

Rachmaninov, The Isle of the Dead:

Berlioz, Symphonie fantastique, Movement V: “The Dream of the Witches’ Sabbath”.

John Williams, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom: the Sacrifice.

Howard Shore, The Silence of the Lambs:

Jerry Goldsmith, Alien:

Have a spooky week!

Sunday Burst of Weird and Awesome!

Yup, time to return to this once-regular feature. Huzzah! Oddities and Awesome abound….

:: Prison slang. Hopefully I never have to learn this stuff firsthand, unless I’m writing a story set in a prison….

:: An artist superimposed some photos from World War II France onto up-to-date photos of the same locations. The results are pretty haunting.

:: I find this interesting, only because for almost as long as I can recall, this blog has received a few search engine hits every single week from people wondering if former Pittsburgh Pirates owner Kevin McClatchy is gay. Apparently he’s come out, so maybe that source of traffic here will dry up a bit?

More next week (maybe)!
