I hate casinos

Yeah, that’s pretty blunt, but there it is: I can’t stand casinos. I don’t understand the appeal at all. I mean, I understand once I find myself inside one. It’s hard to resist all those flashing lights and cheering people and the way the casinos make you go up and down and in and out in an effort to make you forget the existence of an outside world; all the better to put you in the mood to lose your money. But in general, I have no desire to spend time in a casino, I never consider going to oneDown the rabbit hole….

Politics below the fold…. SamuraiFrog on Andrew Breitbart: I wonder if even half of the conservative bloggers who are aghast and dismayed at the number of tweets celebrating Breitbart’s death called for the same kind of respect for the dead they’re calling for now when Ted Kennedy died. I know Breitbart wasn’t. He was on Twitter showing the same lack of decorum and being the same kind of asshat conservatives are whining about right now. I’m not celebrating the death of Andrew Breitbart, but I’m not going to miss this guy, either. I didn’t know him personally, and I’m sorryDown the rabbit hole….

Stop SOPA

Would I be able to write this blog in a world where the Internet is governed by SOPA? I honestly don’t know. I strongly suspect that I would, but it would be a lot less interesting. I also strongly suspect that a good many posts here wouldn’t be possible, and that a good many things I’ve done in this space would result in this blog being ‘blacked out’ because of dreaded ‘piracy’. Stop this bill. The Web is too important to be hobbled in this way. We’ve already burned the Library of Alexandria once. Let’s not do anything like thatDown the rabbit hole….

Warning: rant ahead! My God, would someone in Joe Paterno’s family just step up and shuffle the old fool off to a nursing home so he can babble at the walls or something? Doddering Old Joe has just come out with his latest explanation of where things went wrong: Joe Paterno, in the midst of treatments for lung cancer, made his first public statements since being fired after 46 seasons at Penn State, telling The Washington Post he did not know how to deal with the situation when he received a report that his former defensive coordinator was accused ofDown the rabbit hole….

I have to admit, folks, that I am entirely simpatico with the things that motivate the “Occupy” folks. I loathe the corporatization of America, the concentration of wealth at the very top of society, the notion that this concentration is a good thing that will one day lead to prosperity for everybody, the notion that increasing taxes on this crowd one penny in the hopes of making certain aspects of life easier for the rest of us somehow represents a deeply immoral encroachment upon some perverted definition of ‘freedom’, and all the Ayn Rand bullshit that has led to this. Gregg Easterbrook writes in typically overwrought fashion about the Penn State scandal — he opines that PSU should just terminate its football program, which seems over the top even to me, and I’m about as disgusted by this as one can get — but I did like this: [Interim PSU President] Erickson closed the commercial by declaring, “We are Penn State.” Supporters of Penn State have used this phrase for decades, commencing at a time when the words reflected well on the college. How can the phrase be appropriate here, if Penn State acted dishonorably? In recent years the “weDown the rabbit hole….

Kevin Drum has a great post on Occupy Wall Street. Here’s the money shot: None of this is easy. But the truth is that it’s increasingly impossible to sell people transparently self-promoting fairy tales that plainly don’t reflect how the real world works. If you want them to believe that hard work and discipline are important, then hard work and discipline have to really be important. Not just modestly helpful. Not mere drops compared to the obviously undeserved piles of so many of the super rich. If we want people to believe, we have to believe too. We have toDown the rabbit hole….

Warning: profanity-laced rant below the break. Fuck Joe Paterno. I’m serious. I’ve never been a big fan of the guy, but that’s mainly because I have always found rather unseemly the Cult of the College Coach, the Towering Figure On The Sidelines whose stature is that of godlike power and unaccountability. This business unfolding at Penn State University, however, is breathtaking. I can’t think of anything else that comes close. My father is a collegiate math professor at St. Bonaventure University, a school with a Division I basketball program that has a lot of boosters in that town and hasDown the rabbit hole….

It’s Election Day all across America, folks, so remember to vote and to also do your best to help prevent the horrors of VOTER FRAUD by staying vigilant at all times! Keep an eye on shifty-looking brown people who may be trying to vote twice. Take it into your own hands to demand that such folks present two (2) forms of photo identification, and if they can’t, well, you just go ahead and intimidate the shit out of ’em! We can’t be too careful, and the threat to Democracy and Life As We Know It is ETERNAL! On a lessDown the rabbit hole….
