According to AICN, Lance Henriksen may be in the new X-Files movie…which means that we may not have seen the last of Millennium‘s Frank Black. I’m not sure what to make of this, really; I never much liked the idea that Frank Black operated in the same universe as Mulder and Scully. Millennium was such a great show — for two seasons, anyway. I should watch it again one of these days. Share This PostDown the rabbit hole….

part onepart two Continuing our re-imagining of The Phantom Menace, we are now at the droid invasion of Naboo and the rescue of the Queen. Before I begin, a couple of points that have occurred to me since I posted the first two installments of this series: :: The words “Roger Roger!” should never be uttered by a battle droid or anybody else. First, “Roger” as a response to a command is way too Earth-reminiscent for a Star Wars movie. Second, “Roger Roger!” makes me think of the classic scene in Airplane!. You know the scene I mean. This is turning out to be quite the Holiday Season for Geek Music Stuff: :: The Lord of the Rings Complete Recordings: The Return of the King is available as of tomorrow. Mine should arrive via UPS the day after tomorrow. I can’t wait to spend a big chunk of Thanksgiving Weekend journeying by music back to Minas Tirith, and through Mordor, and thence to the Grey Havens. :: Intrada Records has issued the complete score to Alien, music by Jerry Goldsmith, on a two-disc set. I don’t know if I’ll pick this up or not; I’m not that bigDown the rabbit hole….

part one As we continue fixing The Phantom Menace, we have reached the point where Qui Gon and Obi Wan have escaped death on the Trade Federation ship and are sneaking down to the surface of Naboo. There’s a scene where Queen Amidala speaks to Nute Gunray, and this scene is followed by the Queen conferring with her highest counselors. I would change none of this. I like the mystery here as it’s unfolding: the Queen’s belief that the ambassadors have arrived and commanded the Federation to make settlement, while the Federation insists that the ambassadors have never arrived. Last week I posted a YouTube thingy collating the ten best sound effects of Star Wars, and I indicated that I thought one sound was horribly missing while one made no sense to be included at all. Here it is again: The one that I don’t think belongs there at all is the Techno Union guy. I think he’s a neat touch, but he’s a throwaway gag, really. What’s missing? The Millennium Falcon, obviously. That ship has a totally distinctive sound to its engines, such that in the movies you can always tell when the Falcon is onscreen or approaching.Down the rabbit hole….

Shamus tracks the evolution of Windows, from 3.1 to Vista. He seems to be staunchly against Vista, and he has definite reasons for being so. My new laptop runs Vista, actually, while our current desktop machine runs XP. Personally I’m happy with both, although I don’t do anything really that gives me reason to be concerned about the memory usage of Vista, so basically, for me my appreciation of Vista boils down to that it looks cool and shiny, and I like cool and shiny. I will note that the infamous “security warnings” in Vista don’t bother me all thatDown the rabbit hole….

Joss Whedon has a new show coming to FOX. It’s called Dollhouse. What’s it about? Echo (Eliza Dushku) [is] a young woman who is literally everybody’s fantasy. She is one of a group of men and women who can be imprinted with personality packages, including memories, skills, language—even muscle memory—for different assignments. The assignments can be romantic, adventurous, outlandish, uplifting, sexual and/or very illegal. When not imprinted with a personality package, Echo and the others are basically mind-wiped, living like children in a futuristic dorm/lab dubbed the Dollhouse, with no memory of their assignments—or of much else. The show revolvesDown the rabbit hole….

Long-time readers will know that I am a member of that terribly small, but incredibly zealous, band of folk: those who admire and enjoy the Star Wars prequel trilogy. I enjoyed, and continue to enjoy, each one of them, and I refuse to view them as disastrous films done in by George Lucas’s money-grubbing hubris. The Daughter and I just watched The Phantom Menace this past weekend, and damned if I still can’t see what it is about that movie that everybody hates with such fury. But while I do openly admit to loving these films – long posts aboutDown the rabbit hole….

In yesterday’s Sunday Burst of Weirdness, I linked an item about some people who built a half-size X-Wing starfighter. They have now launched their ship. Jason Bennion has the goods, with two videos. All this needs is some John Williams music and a Wilhelm scream! Share This PostDown the rabbit hole….
