Sorry for three days away from Ye Olde Blogge. It’s been a busy week in “real life”, what with Lenten potluck dinners and services at church and Friday fish fries and trips to the library on Thursday night and a fairly large project at The Store and a new novel by Guy Gavriel Kay to read. But I’m back now, more or less. (Sometimes less is more, after all.) Share This PostDown the rabbit hole….

A good time was had by all yesterday, for the holiday known as Presidents’ Day. After we lit memorial candles for Zachary Taylor, Chester Alan Arthur, and Warren Harding, and after we sacrificed six live weasels in hopes of securing the favor of The Gods of Rodents for George W. Bush*, we took The Daughter to Rochester to visit the Strong Museum. I’ll have pictures up on Flickr in a week or two (I need to upgrade my account before I do more uploading), but for now, let me note that if you haven’t been there in a long timeDown the rabbit hole….

Sorry for the silence the last couple of days, but real life has been busier than usual at home. (Not in any kind of bad way, but just busy.) Anyhow, time for a momentous revelation: Five years ago today, Byzantium’s Shores went “live”. Five years and more than five thousand posts later, here we are, keeping the beat marching on. How much longer can I go? Who knows? I suspect that there are fewer days ahead for this blog than there are behind, but you never know. Sometimes I get the hankering to sign off from Blogistan, but I’m kindDown the rabbit hole….

One week from today marks this blog’s fifth anniversary of existence, which seems to me a good time to do another round of Ask Me Anything!. This is simply where readers get to toss questions at me, which I promise to answer. (Not always seriously, though!) The first round of Ask Me Anything! was a lot of fun, so here’s hoping for Version 2.0. So, you know. Ask me anything! Share This PostDown the rabbit hole….

I’d like to thank everyone who has either commented here, or on their own blogs, or both, for the well-wishes after my story was published in the Buffalo News yesterday. All that meant as much to me, if not more, than getting printed in the first place! Regular posting may resume later today. UPDATE: I’m keeping this post at the top of today’s entries, for people who may be jumping on the blog for the first time. Newer posts appear below. UPDATE II: I’ve been remiss in mentioning the second-place winning story, “The Color of Dreams”, by Buffalo area teacherDown the rabbit hole….

Well, folks, since the Buffalo News website doesn’t update until 9:00 a.m. ET, and since I don’t get home from work until around 3:30 p.m. ET, I won’t have a direct link to the Item In Question until late this afternoon. But you can get at it yourselves by directly visiting the News‘s Life and Arts section, here, and then following the links there. [UPDATE: Direct link is right here.] What am I talking about? Well, I actually won the News‘s short story contest. This story is the first piece of my fiction that has ever appeared in print anyplaceDown the rabbit hole….

Yeah, it was getting time to change the way the blog looked a little. I’m not quite done tinkering yet, but it’s getting there. (Say, does anyone out there use Google’s photo editing software? I had a program that came with the old computer that I liked and knew how to use, but for the new computer, I’ve been using GimpShop, which is, frankly, way more program than I want to bother myself with. That thing gives me a headache trying to figure out the simple stuff I do to pictures.) Anyway, more content will appear later. I gotta makeDown the rabbit hole….

I’m backdating this post to Wednesday, so it’s not sitting there all by itself, but it’s really being written on Saturday, at about 3:20 pm eastern time. Mainly, it’s been a busy few days, which is why I haven’t posted in a while. Regular posting will resume tomorrow. Also, expect a little bit of template-tweaking on my part in the next few days. I feel the need to shake up the look a bit here. Thanks for reading, folks! (And oh, by the way: THURMAN! THURMAN! THURMAN! OK, we’re done. Back tomorrow.) Share This PostDown the rabbit hole….

They put a “Close Tab” button — the little red box with the white ‘X’ — on each tab, whereas before there was only one “Close Tab” button, which was always positioned at the far right of the Open Tabs toolbar and which would only close the tab you happened to be viewing at the moment you click the button. You could close other tabs directly, but to do so you had to right-click the tab and then choose “close tab”. The new way of doing it, with the “Close Tab” button on each tab, has resulted in me inadvertentlyDown the rabbit hole….
