On the Pleasures of Raw Denim

Obviously denim is one of my favorite things on Earth. Few things are more comfortable than well-worn denim that has been broken in over years.

Reviewing my notes. Parts of this book flow wonderfully; others, not so much. #AmWriting #overalls #DoubleDenim

But lately I’ve discovered another pleasure: raw denim. I know, I know — raw denim is stiff and unforgiving. Its color is uniform, with none of the wear of use. Wearing it, raw denim doesn’t hang correctly and doesn’t conform to your body the way broken-in denim does.

Raw Lee overalls

That, however, is part of the charm.

I have, of course, discovered this by several lucky purchases of raw denim overalls.

You can find raw denim overalls pretty easily. Any Tractor Supply store or other workwear establishment will have them. (A good local place is McKay’s Work Clothing in South Buffalo.) Vintage raw denim overalls are another matter. They often go for princely sums that are way higher than I’m willing to pay for such things, but it’s always the case with places like eBay that you never know. You might go months without seeing a good deal on the thing that you want, and then one day, there it is, and for a decent price, too. This happened for me twice in the last year, when I was able to buy two different pairs of raw denim Lee overalls for a song (both for less than what a new pair of Carhartts would set me back these days).

The Lee overalls of the “vintage” era, roughly the 50s through the 80s, have always been my “platonic ideal” of what overalls should be. I love the shape of the bib pocket, the shape of the back part, even the shape of the back pockets and the brass hardware. When I think of overalls, this is what I tend to picture.

(Photos chosen via a Google image search.)

I’ve owned several pairs of Lee overalls for years now, two in blue denim and one in hickory stripe.

Detail. This outfit made me happy. #ootd #overalls #vintage #Lee #bluedenim #scarf

Red and blue: classic combo! (Waiting for my grilled cheese sandwich to heat. Also, I read a fascinating article yesterday that suggests that humans might NOT have been able to perceive the color blue until fairle recently. Science! #overalls #vintage #Le

Another good writing day in the books. G'night, world! #amwriting #overalls #vintage #Lee #HickoryStripe

These were all nicely broken-in when I bought them, but now I’ve acquired two in unworn, pristine raw denim. They even came with the tags attached:

What’s so great about raw denim? Its deep blue is almost black, and the fabric is stiff. Oh my, is it stiff! But the denim is a wonderful super-dark blue with no fade at all, and no creasing anywhere. The pleasure, here, is in the working with “raw” material (hence the name!). It’s the denim equivalent of cooking from scratch, or building a piece of furniture not from a pre-cut kit but from uncut lumber. As another writer puts it:

Raw denim is a true nerd’s category of clothing, the rare subset of fashion that is the domain mostly of men, and thus overrun by complicated terminology and geeks eager to tell you you’re doing it wrong. Basically, though, what “raw” amounts to is denim that wasn’t washed to soften it up (and remove excess indigo dye) before it was sent out into the world — though mine had been Sanforized, or soaked, to pre-shrink them. Raw denim is also usually made of nearly pure cotton — so minimal-to-no Lycra or spandex or what have you, the stuff that gives stretchy jeans their elasticity. What you lose in immediate flexibility, you gain in durability: They’re harder to stretch, but also harder to stretch out. My pair arrived on my doorstep deep blue, stiff, and difficult. Then it became my job to find the patience and persistence to wear them into shape.

There’s a process with raw denim, it turns out: you’re actually not supposed to just toss them into the washer and dryer right off the bat, nor are you supposed to wash them frequently. An initial soaking-and-drying, without soap, followed by wearing a lot with intermittent re-soakings and gentle washings (hand-washing in a tub with a bit of soap is recommended) followed by line-dryings only, is what’s called for. In this way the denim will slowly break in and wear in exact ways that correspond to your body and the way you wear it.

Here’s how the ran denim overalls compare, side-by-side with one of my long-broken-in pairs:

Raw Lee overalls

Step one is to put them in the bathtub and hose them off to rinse out as much of the extra dye as possible (I’d have done this outside but the weather was crappy on the day in question):

Raw Lee overalls

Then I soak them in a bucket for most of a day, periodically wringing them out and changing the water.

Raw Lee overalls

(I was doing to same treatment with a new pair of hickory-striped Dickies.)

Last, they hang on the line to dry. This takes forever. When you thoroughly soak denim, it holds water for a long time. This is not a process for the impatient.

Raw Lee overalls

The result of all this? Well, once dry, you can wear them. The look is great, in my opinion: the denim is still new and dark, with some new wrinkling already starting after the initial soaking and rinsing of the dyes.

Think Pink! The pinkification of my wardrobe commences! I've been looking for a pink dress shirt and finally scored this banded collar one on eBay. Score! Pink is awesome! 😊 #pink #thinkpink #overalls #vintage #Lee #bluedenim #dungarees #denim #rawd

Now, if I could just get the weather in my neck of the woods to dip reliably into the 60s, I’d be all set!

Are you there, collar?

Here’s a weird thing about me: In general, I hate collared shirts.

Now, this might seem slightly confusing since to anyone who pays attention, I clearly own a number of collared shirts. But I have some specific preferences thereof.

Growing up as a kid, I detested collared shirts and I never wore them unless I was specifically ordered to by my parents. I seem to recall that this occasionally vexed my father. In third or fourth grade there was a time when he thought he’d add flannel shirts to my wardrobe, and I resisted this with some vehemence. It wasn’t so much the flannel – although they were brand new shirts, very scratchy – but the stiff collars. I probably wore those shirts a total of twice, both times when I was under orders to do so, and that was that.

What’s my issue with collars? Well, I don’t think that collars generally work well with people who don’t have long or slender necks. My neck is neither of those things, so a collar is always this stiff, annoying thing that’s rubbing all over the sides of my neck and my chin hits it and so on. Plus, collared shirts tend to be made of stiff fabric that doesn’t give terribly well, and they’re mainly designed to be worn with ties, an article of clothing for which I have zero use.

(Seriously. I own, I think, a total of two neckties, and I haven’t worn either one in over thirteen years. In fact, at this point I’m not sure I’d remember how to tie one. I can’t stand the damn things. They’re a useless long triangle of cloth that dangles over your stomach, that always has to be adjusted and fidgeted with, and serves no purpose at all. Ties, in my opinion, can all go to hell, except for bow ties with tuxes. Those look good. Oh, and screw other bow ties too.)

And I hate polo shirts too, because their collars never ever ever look good on me. They’re either too stiff or they lay weird and yuck.

My general feeling is that regular collars and polo shirts don’t look on me so much like these guys…

…as much as these guys.

Not that there’s anything wrong with those fellows, but nobody’s purposely dressing like Archie Bunker or Jed Bartlet, is what I’m saying.

Now, I do make one exception to my hatred of collars: button-down collars don’t bother me. In fact, I’ve come to like them rather a lot! Collars that are buttoned down tend to be a little narrower anyway, so they do tend to stay in position and maintain a shape better, and they don’t tend to rise up and rub my chin. Here’s the outfit I wore the other day when The Wife and I were in Ithaca. I bought this shirt for a pittance at a thrift store, and I quite like the way this turned out.

Traditional mirror selfie! If I'm being honest, I like my outfit from today. A thrifted white button-down under vintage Lee blue denim overalls, and my red Shakespeare scarf. #ootd #overalls #vintage #Lee #bluedenim

Detail. This outfit made me happy. #ootd #overalls #vintage #Lee #bluedenim #scarf

And I have several other button-down collar shirts, either denim or twill. Denim tends to be a special case, and I am willing to wear non-buttoned-down collars in denim or in a nice twill. Regular shirt fabric, though? Not so much.

Pre-writing ritual: scratching Lester's head for luck. (It doesn't work very well.) #AmWriting #Lester #CatsOfInstagram #overalls #Key

OOTD! Black twill buttondown, brown Gap overalls, and my favorite scarf! #ootd #overalls #gap #scarf

I have a green plaid-stripe twill shirt that I haven’t even photographed yet. I’ll be wearing more of this stuff as cooler temperatures arrive.

And that brings me to my newest thing: collarless shirts! Yup, that’s a thing, and I love it. I know, I know – you’ve all been aware of this kind of thing for years, but bear with me. With collarless shirts I can have the nice look of a button-up shirt without the annoying discomfort of a stupid wing collar, and I can look nice without the annoying necessity of a necktie. I’ve recently bought three collarless shirts on eBay, and I like them all. I have a red plaid one, a white one with pinstripes, and a pleasant yellow/peach one. These all make me happy and I look forward to wearing them more, moving forward!

Sigh...I just wanna go home and write.... #writerproblems #amwriting #overalls #Dickies #bluedenim #plaid

Hotel lighting is terrible. Taken before we went to dinner the other night. #collarless #dressedup

(I’ll have a better photo of that one eventually…the lighting in the hotel room where I took the photo was ghastly for this purpose.)

Ack! Flickr's cropping screwed up the last one. Trying again....

Collarless shirt detail. Another shot for an upcoming blog post.

And then there’s this flannel button-down, which I also got for just a couple bucks at the thrift place. I haven’t made up my mind on this one yet, but it was three bucks, so hey, why not?

I went to another thrift store today and found this shirt for four bucks. I was hoping for a different color than red, but this is more toward the maroon side and I like that it's a button-down collar (which is my preference on collared shirts). #flannel

So basically, I hate collars except for when I don’t.

I’m glad I took an entire blog post to say that….

It’s Prismatic!

So there’s this new photo app called Prisma that’s all the rage. It’s kind of cool, really — it’s similar to Instagram in that it takes photos (new or existing) and applies filters to them to make them look nifty. The difference is that Prisma’s filters don’t just tweak certain aspects of the photo, like contrast or color balance or such things; Prisma uses your photo as the basis for a new image, called an “artwork”, in a certain artistic style, specified by use of the filter. It takes a little getting used to (and I’m not quite there yet), and initially I found it hard to see the appeal, but as I played with it more (mostly using existing photos), I found myself also liking it more.

Here’s a selection of photos that I filtered through Prisma. Some of these look really nifty, if I do say so myself!

I may be biased, but I think that these are all pretty cool!

Nothin’ good comes from a can…. (An experiment involving whipped cream)

Pie-in-the-face weirdness below the break….

OK. So it’s been my experience that the most common form of whipped cream in the US, the stuff in the aeresol can, is great for topping your pumpkin pie or for dipping strawberries or for giving to cats as a treat (yes, this is a thing), but lousy for pies in faces. The stuff is very highly aerated so as to come out of the can better, but once it’s dispensed it breaks down very quickly. You really have to use the stuff fast, lest the effect be less of getting hit with a pie and more of getting hit with a plate of thick milky-cream stuff. Yuck.

But, I saw a can of whipped cream the other day marked “Extra Creamy!” and that it was made with real cream. So…I tested it, because that’s what you do.

I dispensed the contents of the can into a pie crust. It started breaking down almost immediately, which was not an encouraging sign….

I am skeptical of this pie.

But hey…in for a penny, in for a pound as they say.

The Hit!

These results weren’t awful, I must admit. Not great, but not nearly as disappointing as previous attempts with this stuff. In fact, these particular results weren’t really disappointing at all.

Aftermath!

Aftermath!

I don’t expect this stuff will replace my usual preferred products for this sort of goofery (you can’t beat a nice coconut cream pie for splatting purposes), but for a “quick hit”, there are worse options out there.

So the whipped cream in the spray can gets a partial reprieve. I will not be embracing shaving cream, though. Because ewwwww!

Tips for success: Use a lot of the stuff, and dispense it as close to the splatting as possible. The spray-can stuff will melt quickly. And have fun, because as always, a pie in the face is a wonderful thing!

On Plaid

I’ve always had an odd relationship with plaid. I love it, but I’m never sure it looks all that great on me. Until now, my only plaid clothes have been fleece tops:

Plaid beneath stripes.

Rocking the "Poe's 'The Raven'" infinity scarf today. #ootd #scarf #infinityscarf #poe #overalls #Dickies #fleece

But then, a while back, I bought a regular plaid shirt on eBay. I had to search around for a while, because I wanted a standard shirt, but I wanted a banded collar. Why? Well, in general, I’m not a big fan of collars on shirts. I have a few denim shirts with collars that I like, but by and large, I prefer collarless. Here’s the result:

Sorry to keep revisiting this photo, but I really like the way I look herein! (And yes, I am wearing this very outfit next time I get a pie in the face!)

I don’t hate this. I do worry that red plaid, worn under a pair of overalls, might look a little too, well, Hee Haw. But then…what difference does that make? I mean, I’m already weird enough, what’s another thing…and I do like the look.

Hmmmmm.

Report from the County Fair 2015

Some random notes from this year’s iteration of the Erie County Fair:

:: One regret that was in my control: No ride on the Big Wheel. It was such a gorgeous night…shoulda done that.

:: One regret that was out of my control: Apparently the Fair has done away with the daily parade? I hate this decision. We loved that parade and we hope it comes back. What the hell, Erie County Fair!

:: Another regret out of our AND the Fair’s control: Due to avian flu, no birds were on display at all. So no cool-looking chickens from local farms. Bummer!

:: I read people complain about prices on rides (well, duh) and food. The food one catches me by surprise. Granted, it’s more expensive depending on how many people you have along, but I think we spent around $50 to $60 on food, all day, for the three of us. If you’re spending a lot more than that for a small group, are you eating all the things? Or buying your own drinks? Bring in a cooler with stuff in it! They let you do this! The only drinks we bought were a couple of birch beer refills.

:: There’s an outpost of the local Antique Mall at the Fair every year. I don’t usually buy stuff there…but this time, I did. Did I ever.

Cool Toy score no. 2: The starship ENTERPRISE herself! #startrek #starshipenterprise

Cool toy score no. 1: Klingon Bird of Prey! #startrek #klingonbirdofprey #scifi #spaceship

Cool toy score no. 3. Is it weird that I hate the ALIEN movies, but find the beastie himself just amazing? #sciencefiction #sf #scifi #alien

Yup: the NCC-1701-A Enterprise, the Klingon Bird-of-Prey, and the Alien from, well, ALIEN. Now, I’m on record for hating the ALIEN franchise from pillar to post — I’ve disliked every single one of those movies (in fairness, I never watched the fourth one, figuring that I was deeply unlikely to enjoy it after the crappy first three), but the Alien beastie him/herself? That is one of the iconic creatures of all time. Just a fantastic design. So I bought him.

:: More importantly, I kept The Wife properly adorned. Check out this bracelet!

I bought this bracelet for The Wife. I think it was made for her wrist, actually. #jewelry

:: The model railroad layout included an alien abduction, and Minions. Because Minions are this close to kicking the Frozen crowd off the stage.

In this year's model railroad layout at The Fair: Alien abductions! (And Minions hidden throughout.) #ErieCountyFair #modelrailroad #minions

:: As always, for me the highlight of the Fair is the Creative Arts building, where people show off paintings and quilts and items they’ve sewn and photography and place settings. I love this stuff so much and I always spend at least an hour looking at the creative efforts of Erie County people. Seriously, this stuff is always good. Here’s but a small sampling:

Quilts of the Fair I #ErieCountyFair

Quilts of the fair II #ErieCountyFair

Quilts of the fair III #ErieCountyFair

Decorated guitar #ErieCountyFair

(Sorry about the size differential there…I hadn’t got ’round to uploading the lower six photos to Flickr yet, as of this writing.)

:: Most importantly, though? A dream came true this year! Our day at the Fair was cool enough that I was finally, at long last, able to attend whilst rocking overalls. Granted, it was my Carhartt white painters’ pair, which is made of lighter fabric and therefore cooler, but still: Overalls at the Fair. One more item off the Bucket List!

Enjoying the Fair. It was just a great day. #eriecountyfair #overalls #carhartt

The Wife and I at the Erie County Fair!

It’s the little things, folks! But if there’s an event that cries out for overalls more than the Erie County Fair, I’ve not found it.

See you next year, Fair! (And bring the Daily Parade back!)

The Whitening

White overalls. Oh yeah, babe.

Bleached overalls!

I’ve wanted a pair of white overalls forever, and I even got a pair a while back, by Carhartt. My problem, though, was that most white overalls are made for painters, and for some reason, the bib pocket on painters’ overalls is almost always that triangular shape, as opposed to the “traditional” style of bib pocket, which I prefer. Finding a pair like this has been mostly fruitless — they exist, and they occasionally show up on eBay, but they’re pretty rare and I’ve never seen a pair in my size. So I did the next logical thing: I took an older pair of blue ones that I owned already and bleached them. This is the result. Score!

Bleached overalls, take 2. I really like the way these turned out. #overalls #Dickies #bleacheddenim

By way of technique, I used a big 5-gallon bucket, filled it about two-thirds with water, and then added some bleach. I didn’t measure the bleach, but my concentration was no more than 1 part bleach to 3 parts water, and likely even less strong than that. I submerged the overalls, stirred them around a bit, and then left them in there a while. After an hour or so, I changed the water and repeated, and then waited another hour, whereupon I changed the water again. I think I went through four changes of water altogether, and the result is that almost all the blue is gone. There’s a tiny bit remaining, if you know to look for it, but functionally, these are white!

After the final removal from the bleach water, I rinsed them with the garden hose and wrung them out, and then I washed them twice. First trip through the washer I used no soap at all, so it was essentially two rinses, and then a full washing in cold water with soap. After that, an air drying on our line, and that was that.

Bleached overalls, detail. A tiny bit of blue remains, but overall, I'm happy. (Get it? Overall, I'm happy? Get it? Overall? 😂😂😂 I'll show myself out.) #overalls #Dickies #bleacheddenim

Working...always working #amwriting #overalls #Dickies #bleacheddenim

Not that I’m wearing overalls much in July, but fall will be here soon enough!
