Today I start a brief (five days) vacation in which I’m mostly sticking around the Home Unit, although The Wife and I are going on an overnighter/day trip Friday and Saturday. I’ve always liked these kinds of vacations; there’s a lot to be said for just being off work, without all the rigmarole of traveling to a destination and doing travelly stuff. I’ve been indulging these kinds of vacations for years…but now they’re calling them “staycations”.
So, the Random Wednesday Conversation Starter is simply this: Is “staycation” a dumb word, or what?!
Yes. I think I may have rolled my eyes overtly on more than one occasion at the use of the word.
Vacation: a period of respite away from home or work. Staycation is a silly and pointless neologism that should wither and die. And a pox upon anyone who answers "I'm going on vacation" with "where are you going?" I'm going to not be at work, you presumptuous popinjay!
Sorry. I get worked up sometimes.
While the concept is sound (I have had many a vacation where I have not actually left home, but that's because I live in our province's premier tourist destination) the word itself is trite and tends to be overused, particulalry be certtain people who aren't really on vacation, they just stay in their house and do a lot of drugs.
I like it!
Dumb word, and it always makes me think of people somewhat mournfully claiming they're putting a happy face on something that does NOT make them happy.
I could probably stay home for a vacation quite happily, if none of the people who make demands on my time knew I was in town.

Well, it's good, descriptive term, but yet oddly irritating.
