About a month ago I mentioned a new children’s bookstore opening soon in Orchard Park, “B is for Books”. Well, the store is going to open this week! They’re doing a soft-open on October 9, with a grand opening bash to come on October 13. Check out their website, bis4books.com, for more information. These aren’t the best of times to be opening independent bookstores, but here’s hoping they make it — consider them, for instance, for your next big birthday party for your kid, if you’re sick of the whole Chuck E. Cheese scene. And support a local business whileDown the rabbit hole….

Part One: The Other Day. I’m sitting at my desk, going through some stuff. The Daughter is playing on the computer. I’ve just picked up a shopping bag. THE DAUGHTER: Where’s that bag from? ME: Barnes&Noble. THE DAUGHTER: Ooooooh. I hate their commercials. She resumes playing her game. I mull over what she’s just said. ME: Huh?! Part Two: Last night. We’re driving past McKinley Mall. ME: Interesting…I’ll bet that big area of construction there next to JC Penney is where the new Barnes&Noble is going in. THE DAUGHTER: Ooooooh. I hate Barnes&Noble! I hate their commercials! I haven’t mentioned this in a few days, but hey, Buffalo bloggers (all those who haven’t already weighed in), pencil in December 8 for a Buffalo Blogger Christmas Con, or Buffalo Blogging Festivus, or whatever we want to call this gathering. My suggestion for a venue is this place. Yes, it’s in the Southtowns (Aieee!), and you can’t see the HSBC Building from their parking lot (thus guaranteeing that Mary Kunz Goldman* won’t be in attendance), but it’s quite easy to get to (I-90 to 219 South, 219 South to Milestrip East, Milestrip East to Southwestern Blvd/US20 East, two milesDown the rabbit hole….

Some stuff going on in my neck of the Niagara Frontier, if anyone’s interested: :: They don’t have a website yet, nor is their physical location even open yet, but there’s a new children’s bookstore coming to Orchard Park, called “B is for Books”. The signage says that they’re “coming this fall”, so hopefully they’ll be open soon. I’ll report back when they are. There’s also a sign that says they’ll do birthday parties as well, so that might be a nice alternative to the Chuck E. Cheese kind of thing. :: Have any of my readers taken advantage atDown the rabbit hole….

Threads here or here, for residents of the Buffalo Prefecture or anyone from other Prefectures of Blogistan who may wish to travel to Buffalo for a hootenanny on Saturday, December 8. And if anyone has a suggestion for a venue, that would be helpful too — maybe Duff’s in Orchard Park? Someplace in Cheektowaga? Pearl Street? And would a Secret Santa-style gift exchange be fun, or really lame? What say you, folks? (I’m closing comments for this post because I’d like to keep only two comments threads open on this subject for now. But feel free to comment in eitherDown the rabbit hole….

A special note for the citizens of the Buffalo Prefecture of Blogistan: Jen and I have been in contact, and we’re wondering if Saturday, December 8, would be a good day for a BloggerCon Christmas Party. We figure that blocking out a date really early in advance would make it easiest for people to attend, no? As of yet this is literally all we’ve planned, so a venue would have to be chosen — maybe one of those big restaurants by the Ralph, or the Buffalo Sports Garden in Orchard Park? I heart JP Losman

Here’s what I love to see: JP Losman, the Bills’ young starting quarterback (entering his fourth year with the team), has taken his new hometown into his heart in a big way: When Losman started to think about what he could do for the City of Buffalo, it’s no surprise his focus went to the grass-roots level. Lending his name to a project, donating a bunch of money and then handing it all off to subordinates is so not his style. If Losman is going to get involved, he’s going to roll up his sleeves and throw his heart intoDown the rabbit hole….

A few years ago, when I discovered that other people in Buffalo were blogging, a community of sorts started to develop, in fits and starts. Gradually that community got larger and larger, and as it did so, it started to separate itself out a bit into somewhat-discrete groups, ultimately with two “collectives” basically becoming the big wheels of it all. Now one of those collectives has caught the other behaving badly, and is itself behaving as though it has pulled off some kind of grand journalistic expose of the kind you used to see in the heyday of Mike WallaceDown the rabbit hole….

I’ve been remiss in not wishing Alan Bedenko well on his run for the Erie County Legislature. So, best wishes to him, and high hopes that he wins. I’d pledge to vote for him, but I’m not in his district. I also didn’t know that Alan grew a beard. Someone should have told him that bearded guys look shifty and evil. Of course, someone may have also pointed out that without a beard, Alan looked eerily like a dark-haired Dick Cheney…. Share This PostDown the rabbit hole….
