:: When a half-marathon runs by his house, what’s an energetic young dog to do?

:: A while back I posted a video of a space shuttle launch from the vantage point of a solid-fuel rocket booster. Here’s a similar video.

It’s not that interesting a video for the first minute or two, because of the vantage point of the camera, but then we reach the point (at about the 1:50 mark) where the booster rockets separate and fall back to Earth, and it becomes amazing. You gradually see the second booster recede until it’s invisible…and the Earth just circles around lazily, getting bigger all the time…and then the other rocket booster comes back into view. And if you freeze the frame at exactly the 4:28 mark, you can actually see the thrust exhaust contrail making a giant bow all the way from the launch pad to the other booster, still free-falling back to Earth.

The screen goes black at about the 5:38 mark; stick with it, though, because the video switches to the perspective of a different camera at that point. Which camera? Watch!

:: A Twitter followee of mine posted this: The world’s ten geekiest houses. It’ll be obvious which is my favorite, but they’re all really amazing.

Sunday Burst of AWESOME!

No weirdness this week, just awesome, in honor of saxophone great Clarence Clemons, who passed away yesterday. This is my favorite Bruce Springsteen song: here’s “Born to Run”.

In truth, I don’t know Springsteen’s oeuvre all that well; he’s always been one of those people whose work I eternally mean to explore more without ever actually doing it. I think it may be time. I always thought Clarence Clemons was all kinds of terrific. May his work be remembered for decades to come!

:: Cracked.com has yet another fine item up: a list of the Five Most Excessively Manly Hobbies In The World. I’d seen one of them before — the “skysuit” item — but the other four caught me unawares. I’ll only spoil one of them: Glacier surfing. This is when you use a surfboard to ride the enormous waves that occur when giant chunks of glacier ice break free and fall into the ocean.

:: Here’s an amazing series of time-lapse photographs showing the Milky Way rising over the landscapes of South Dakota.

:: Guy goes outside to wave at his kid’s schoolbus when it goes by, every morning, the entire school year. With costumes. And the kid is sixteen years old. Guffaw.

:: A helpful commenter (I think!) left this here the other day.

I’ve never watched Paula Deen or read anything by her, and on the basis of this video, I don’t believe I will. Not because I have anything against oxtails or someone who finds erotic pleasure in eating oxtails, but because I can’t deal with someone who uses the word “romantical”.

:: I don’t tote book bags around, but if I did, this would be a candidate.

:: On a sudden whim, I typed “Star Wars Yiddish” into Google and went with the first link I found. That would be this video, which appears to be the “Luke meets Yoda” scene from The Empire Strikes Back, dubbed into Yiddish, I assume for a school project. I don’t speak a single word of Yiddish. I wonder how the translator accommodated Yoda’s signature speech pattern?

:: I’ve seen this a bunch of places this week, and I can’t help but link it: National leader announces the death of a prominent terrorist. I’m so conflicted….

:: I’d love to try this spice mixture called “Ras al Hanout”, which you add to coffee before brewing. It’s a pretty extensive recipe, though, and a lot of the component spices are things I wouldn’t want to have around in quantity, because I’m not sure I’d use them for anything else but this. I wonder if there’s a spice outlet in Buffalo where one can buy teeny portions of spice? Anyone?

:: Oh, how I’d love to see this: the world’s largest model airport. Make sure to check out the photo galleries! Wonderful stuff here. This is some seriously great model work.

:: According to some gonzo thing put together by a team of scienticians, men with longer ring fingers than index fingers on their right hands are better looking. Science finally establishes that I’m good looking. That would have been a useful scientific finding back when I was getting rejected by women on a regular basis!

:: This is fascinating:

Scientists have long wondered why the sherpas of the Tibetan Highlands can negotiate with ease elevations that cause some humans to become life-threateningly ill. Tibetans live at altitudes of 13,000 feet, breathing air that has 40 percent less oxygen than is available at sea level, yet suffer very little mountain sickness. The reason, according to a team of biologists in China, is human evolution, in what may be the most recent and fastest instance detected so far.

Evolution rules. I love evolution!

:: The last known combat veteran of World War I is dead. So ends at last one of the stupidest damn wars in history.

:: Chris Sims answers an eternal question (that’s only been an eternal question for a few years): If Harry Potter battled Batman, who would win? I wouldn’t dream of giving away Mr. Sims’s answer, but I tend to agree. I do disagree with him on the extent to which Harry Potter is a passive hero in the books. It’s true that he doesn’t take the bull by the horns as much as one might expect — especially in the early books — but I think it all fits together with the series’s entire thrust that no matter how good one is, you just can’t do it alone.

(I’d also note that I’m not the biggest Batman fan in the world. I’ve liked most of the movies, but I was never really able to get into Batman in the comics. I know, I know, The Dark Knight Returns is one of the greatest of all comics and all that, but I just didn’t care for it — and I will never be able to accept Batman defeating Superman. I just can’t get there in my head.)

:: I don’t know why I never thought of it, but what if, in Pac-man, when you exited the maze via one of the tunnels, instead of appearing on the other side of the maze, you appeared in a completely new maze? Warning: this thing is addictive, and some of the mazes are diabolical.

:: Trace some of the world’s great historical (and a few fictional) journeys and voyages. Fascinating stuff, although I’d hoped for more detail.

:: Remember how disillusioned you were when you discovered that the Big Mac you actually get at McDonald’s bears little resemblance to the perfect-looking burger in the commercials, the one that towers so high you wondered how anyone could open their jaws enough to bite the thing? Sure you do.

:: Remember how creepy you thought Steve Buscemi’s eyes were, the first time you saw him in a movie? Sure you do.

:: Remember how you’ve always wanted to be able to zoom around the Solar System and look at stuff? Sure you do.

:: Are you getting tired of the endless debate over whether video games are or are not Art? Sure you’re not!
