Been a while since I updated the progress on our greyhound Hobbes and his leg injury (see here and here for earlier developments). After his procedure in January he spent a number of weeks getting driven to Pittsburgh weekly for follow-up visits, and then he was released to physical therapy here at home, and he’s been doing very well. You can still tell that he favors that leg on occasion, but he’s getting much stronger on it and he walks normally, maybe eighty percent of the time. That’s huge, since at the time nobody was totally confident that he’d be able to even keepDown the rabbit hole….

Hobbes (the greyhound) and Carla (the pittie) are both doing fine! Carla has been struggling with some arthritis in her joints, but last week she went to the vet for an injection of fluid into one of her troublesome joints, and she’s been doing really well since. Meanwhile, you may remember that Hobbes got hurt last fall and has been struggling ever since. Well, his physical therapy has been going really well, and the next step is getting an orthotic that he’ll wear on the “bad” leg when he’s oot-and-aboot, which will help stabilize that leg. He uses that leg most ofDown the rabbit hole….

So, a while back I wrote about an injury Hobbes sustained back when he was running in our yard. Well, this has been a long time developing and the story still isn’t done. As a refresher: Hobbes came up whimpering and lame while running in our yard. We thought he had clipped a tree or hit the fence, but even then I wasn’t sure how that would have resulted in a fracture in his ankle, given how glancing the blow would have been on that particular day. We have since concluded that he likely had a lingering injury from theDown the rabbit hole….

Poor guy. Because Hobbes is hurt, he wasn’t allowed on the Buffalo Bills’ team plane to London, even though he is the Official Greyhound of the Buffalo Bills. (Yes he is! Look at his cast! He has to be! I’m sure we’ll get the official notification from the team any day now!) He went into the vet on Friday to get the leg re-wrapped, which he’ll have to have done weekly moving forward; in five weeks he gets new X-rays to see where he is with healing. So far, he seems more annoyed and frustrated than anything else. He really wantsDown the rabbit hole….

Poor doggo! The other day Hobbes was sprinting around our yard, which he’s done dozens of times since he’s been with us, but this time he cut too close to the fence or maybe he clipped one of our trees or…we don’t know. All we do know is that he suddenly abandoned his run and came back to us, yelping in pain and keeping that leg off the ground. It turns out that he has a small fracture, so no running for him for a while, until we get that healed up! Also, it put the kibosh on our plansDown the rabbit hole….

And who, you may ask, is this? Well, may I present the Formerly-Named “Hulk”. (We’re working on his new name. Stay tuned.) It’s funny how when you lose a dog, people wait a respectable amount of time before asking, “Hey, do you think you might get another?” We held off a bit because we didn’t want memories of Cane to color our expectations of and relationship with any new dog; plus, we figured that Carla had her own process to get through.
