Hey folks, I’m noticing a tiny little service bug with the comments here. I have it set up so that each new comment is forwarded to my G-mail account, which is how I learn of their existence. Within each e-mailed comment, there are links to publish, delete, or mark comments as spam. I usually just click “Publish”, and the comment goes through.

I’ve noticed a few times over the last week, though, that sometimes I click “Publish”, and the “Comment Published” pop-up screen shows up — but the comment doesn’t go anywhere. I don’t discover this until I actually sign onto Blogger and see a notification of unmoderated comments, and this find out that the comment I’d thought I’d published earlier is still sitting there in Limbo.

So, if you comment and later notice that it’s been an oddly long period of time and your comment hasn’t appeared, that’s likely what’s happening.

I’m doing a small bit of tinkering underneath the hood. Very small. But I’ve finally gotten up off of me arse and figured how to implement expandable posts here on Byzantium’s Shores, so I’ll be able to conceal longer posts (and posts in which I use lots of photos) by hiding the rest of the content behind a link. Which is something that lots of blogs have been able to do since, oh, 2003 or so, but hey, I am quick on the draw!

See, this here is an example. Woo-hoo!!!

I’m doing a bit of mucking about with the blog template, folks, so if things look weird, bear with. Thanks!

UPDATE: OK, I think I’m done for right now. I liked the look I was using a lot, except for one thing: the “meta-” text regarding each post. I’m talking about the dates, the labels, and the comments links. This all appeared in very tiny lettering, at the top of each post. That bugged me — especially the location of the comments link. I’d wager that on at least 98 percent of the blogs out there, links to Comments come at the bottom of the posts, not at the top. This was occasionally a problem here as readers would, through really no fault of their own, read through a post and then click the comments link they saw at the bottom of the post…which belonged to the next post. Oy! Not good. So now, that’s fixed.

I’ve also added some “share” buttons for each post, for easy propagating of my vapid content to other regions of Teh Interweb, if any of you should so desire. There we go! Onward and upward!

I’m Into Grace is a brand-new blog (one day old, only one post) by a woman I know from college. I got to know her fairly well back then by virtue of often sitting beside each other in band and orchestra — our seating arrangements often put the Principal Trumpet (that was me) next to the Principal French Horn (that was her). She was bright, energetic, and a really good horn player. I assume she’s still two of those things — no idea about her horn playing. I hope she’s kept up on that better than I have the trumpet playing!

Anyway, she is now a Lutheran pastor in Minnesota. (Garrison Keillor’s jokes aside, it turns out that there really are Lutherans in Minnesota!) Her faith will apparently be a major theme of her blog. New blogs are always awesome, especially when they’re by old friends!

Wow! I don’t recall the last time this happened, or if it’s ever happened, but I got a hate-mail today! Yay!

Anyway, “Edward” says:

you and your ilk should never open your stupid beak, you don’t belong in this country, not even on this Earth. What a base kind of “human”, and I am being generous, for God’s sake!

Unfortunately, Eddie didn’t bother to leave any indication as to what particular post of mine it was that brought this on, so I have no idea what it was that got under his skin. That is obviously something over which I will lose precious milliseconds of sleep tonight, but I’ll make up for it with a nap tomorrow. I do assume that it was one of my political views that got him, with the “you don’t belong in this country!” thing. That sort of attack always amuses me, because by simply writing those words, Little Eddie has already admitted, whether he knows it or not (likely not), that by definition, I am a better American than he.

Ah, the amusement!
