Erie County’s Chestnut Ridge park is one of my favorite places and has been for years. This park, larger than New York City’s Central Park, is set on the side of one of the higher hills to the south of Buffalo, and it is dominated by streams and gorges and beautiful meadows and one large hill that’s the regions preeminent spot for sledding when there’s snow…and there are even a few waterfalls. One such waterfall is particularly beloved, not just because it’s beautiful in itself, but because there’s a hollow spot worn into the shale bed over which it drops,Down the rabbit hole….

This is what happens when you go to take a long-exposure photo but you forgot to tuck your filter wallet in your pocket, so you have no ND filter to put on your lens. (My camera does not have a built-in ND filter.) Oh well! Live and learn. I took Hobbes outside this morning to do his business (he’s still hobbled up, so we can’t just let him out to do his thing in the backyard, we have to actually leash him up and walk him over to where he can pee), and it was about 6:30am, which this time of year is about an hour before sunrise. I glanced about for cars on the street (there were none), and when I looked up at the southern sky, to the left, my jaw dropped. One area of photography I need to work on–well, I need to work on all of them, but especially this one–is low-light photography. I’ve done some experimenting here and there, and my results haven’t been super-encouraging yet, at least, not until the other night, when I got several shots that were workable. Not really good, but workable. We went to dinner at Lago 210, a restaurant that is right on the Lake Erie shore in Hamburg. The views there are pretty special, but when we got there it was after 7pm, and this time of year that’s well after sunset. VisibilityDown the rabbit hole….

What might this be? That’s a mistake, is what it was. I was trying to take a photo of something and I screwed up the focus. What was I trying to capture? This, but close up: Better luck next time…but I do like the mistake shot! The lens flares look neat to me, even if you can’t really tell what it is we’re even looking at in that shot. Enlargeable version here. I took this photo last Sunday while walking around the Charles Burchfield Art and Nature Center in West Seneca, one of this region’s underknown gems. It was a stunning morning, because the fog had not yet lifted and therefore the light was soft and diffuse and almost dreamy in places. A nifty lesson I just learned, all by myself! I’ve been using the Vero social media app (mobile only, as far as I know, but my user name is @kellysedinger) as a sort of showcase for what I consider to be my best photography. It’s too late for me to rebrand my Instagram as a “portfolio” account (though I suppose I could start up a new account, which I may do, and switch between that and the “personal” account), and my Flickr is all over the map since that’s where ALL my photos go (and only a small amount ofDown the rabbit hole….

I’m finding myself more and more interested in street photography, or “streetscape”, as I prefer to call it. Here are a few examples from a walk I took last week around the village of East Aurora. No, that’s not a quote from anything, so far as I’m aware, but we’ve been watching Bridgerton of late so I’ve got that kind of pseudo-Regency era rhythm in my ear.
