I’m sure I’ve asked at some point what your preferred sandwich condiment or spread is — mayo, mustard, butter, whatever — but I haven’t asked about technique. So: when making a sandwich, do you spread your condiment of choice on one slice of bread, or both? Share This PostDown the rabbit hole….

So here’s a question that I posed the other day on The Twitters, after seeing it discussed by a few other folks. There’s an awful lot of writing advice that counsels writers to “grab the reader on Page One!”. You have to hook your reader immediately, and if you can do it with a great opening line, so much the better. Here’s my problem with that: My own experience as a reader runs deeply contrary to this. I honestly can remember very few books I’ve read where I knew on the first page that I didn’t like the book. ThisDown the rabbit hole….

Copacetic is my least favorite word. I remember at the end the 1990s, suddenly everybody and their brother was using this word, and for some reason the word annoys me. I got to thinking about this when I read something on Facebook yesterday about how awful the word moist is, which got me to wondering: What is your least favorite word? (Excluding naughty language.)
