If you watch cooking shows on teevee, what’s your favorite? Could be food documentaries, instructional cooking shows, competitions, anything!

    Don't watch. I see Nigella's on some new show, and I think she's lovely as all get out, but STILL not watching.

    I don't watch traditional cooking shows much, just once in a while. The one food show I am sort of hooked on right now is "Diners, Drive-in's, and Dives". I keep hoping he will review some place near me.

    Top chef, especially the masters version.

    I prefer the old-fashioned PBS instructional shows. I like the feeling of being one-on-one in a kitchen with a friendly chef who's showing me how to do something, rather than watching a competition or some kind of gimmick or star trip. I enjoy a lot of them, but favorites include Jacques Pepin, Julia Child, Ming Tsai, Rick Bayless, and Nick Stellino. Oh, and America's Test Kitchen is one of the most useful cooking-related shows ever.

    That said, I have enjoyed Diners, Drive-ins and Dives and Anthony Bourdain's No Reservations, but I consider those more in the family of the travelogue…

    I prefer the ones (like Lidia's Kitchen or the Jacques Pepin shows) that are more about "how to make this food" (or "here is the history of this food") than the ones that are all about the particular celebrity chef.

    I really dislike the competition shows; they make me tense.

    OH. And Jason reminded me: I love America's Test Kitchen – because it has useful information and the chefs don't really preen or take a "star turn."
