Hey! New stuff on the Official Site! In this case, a case study on characterization from the great old comic strip Calvin and Hobbes*. And if you’re not paying attention over there, you should really start because pretty soon I’ll start ramping up with content pertaining to November’s release of The Wisdomfold Path! Check it out!
* Yes, I know “case study” sounds pretentious. It’s what I’m going with, though!
I’m heading into what will almost certainly be a very busy couple of months, in terms of writing: it’s time to get going on prepping The Wisdomfold Path for publication, and I’m also going to keep working daily on Lighthouse Boy (not the actual title), because I don’t want to lose momentum on that book yet again. That being the case, there will likely be a drop in posting frequency here. However, I will not declare a hiatus or disappear entirely, because that would be bogus!
As always, I can be found frequenting Twitter and Instagram a lot, so if you just gotta have a dose of my particular banana oil, there are ways!
And with that, back to the salt mines!

(Oh, and the bit of advice in question from Mr. Simon? I’m not sure if I follow that or not, to be honest. I tend to write until I’m tired and don’t want to write anymore. On reflection I think I very well might follow this advice, but I’ve never really thought about it. I’ll pay more attention next time I’m working on something new.)
Hey! Want to read the opening paragraph of GhostCop? Here it is!
I’ve written about eighteen dozen variants of this opening, which means that I’ll almost certainly change it again. Openings drive me crazy. There needs to be something there, something to “grab”, or so I’m told. Fact is, I don’t remember ever putting a book aside on the basis that the opening sentence or paragraph didn’t “grab” me. I always give books longer than that to start to work their magic on me. But a great opening is kind of magical, and when you can cast that spell that early in the proceedings, that’s something special. That’s why I always work hard on my openings, and why I’m almost always disappointed in how they turn out.
Anyway, opinions on this one?
This round of edits on The Wisdomfold Path is DONE. D-O-N-E.
Now I just have to do a couple of formatting things, and then the book is off to get itself proofread.
Meanwhile, time to make a pass through the GhostCop manuscript, which I haven’t looked through since I finished writing the thing, about a year-and-a-half ago. Wow….
I’m cranking through edits for The Wisdomfold Path right now, hoping to finish this weekend.
I’m also starting to kick around ideas for a second series of books in the same universe. I figure I’ve got a galaxy to play with, so there’s no reason I can’t tell other stories there. What’s forming in my head is something along the lines of a “the adventures of a smallish ship and her quirky crew” thing — a mashup of Firefly and James Bond In SPACE!!!. Obviously this is at the very early point in gestation. All I know is the name of the ship captain and the number of people on the crew (five).
