I coulda been a rock-star photographer….

Last Thursday night, The Wife and I attended the evening performance of Trans-Siberian Orchestra, which comes around to these parts every December. Lots of people mock TSO, but we always have a grand time when we go. This was our third time (our first was something like 15 years ago!), and we enjoy it more each time. There are so many different genres of music represented under the big tent of “Christmas music”, so why not hair-metal arena-style prog rock?

Anyway, here are some photos from the show that I took just with my phone.

Since the Christmas Blizzard hit the very next day, this concert–less than a week ago as I write this–feels like an epoch ago….

One year ago….

This was an early view out a small window as we flew in the early morning from Buffalo to Atlanta. Then we flew from Atlanta to Los Angeles. And then we flew from Los Angeles to Honolulu.

I don’t know if I’ll make that specific itinerary ever again, but I’m sure as hell someday making that my final destination again.

First Snows!!!

My friend Shaun Reiter, who puts up with more of my crap at work than he probably deserves to, was at a social function at Highmark Stadium the other night. When he left, darkness had fallen and the first flurries of snow were coming down, and he took a fantastic picture from outside the stadium on his way out. I saw the photo and asked if I could post it, and he graciously consented, so here it is.

If you’ve seen anything about the impending weather in this region, this particular vista may look very different in the next few days….

A trip to the Gardens

Today we went to the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens because in addition to their standard beautiful displays, they were also having an orchid show, courtesy the local orchid hobbyists’ association. Here are some of the many pictures I took! More available in this Flickr album.

Of course the topiary bison’s name is Josh Allen. I have a feeling that if the Bills win the Super Bowl in February, next October and November will see hundreds of babies in local hospitals named Josh, Joshua, Joshina, Joshette, Joshifer….

I walked through this and was not whisked back in time, a la STAR TREK, to 1930s NYC. I call BS.

The Hunter rises!

My favorite constellation has almost always been Orion the Hunter–and I only hedge on this just a bit, because maybe there was a point when I was in first grade and just starting to learn about constellations that I preferred the Big Dipper or some such thing.

Orion is a winter constellation, and it always starts showing up in my sky around the mid-point of autumn–that is to say, it shows up at a time when I can see it around that time. It’s possible that Orion rises first at midnight or something…I don’t really know. All I do know is that the other morning I left for work and it was early enough that the stars were still visible. I glanced southward…and there was the Hunter.

And here he is, in all his glory!

By the way, I hope that once in a while you take time to stop and reflect on the fact that most of us now carry around a device on a mundane basis that is capable of astrophotography. That’s kind of amazing, isn’t it?

Luckily, I have a surplus of USB-C cords for just such an occasion.

(Not that anyone asked, but my favorite brand for such items is Anker. I have several of their bluetooth speakers, their bluetooth earbuds, two of their portable chargers, and a whole bunch of their cords.)

The sky, over about an hour

I had to leave for work early today, and the stars were still visible through wisps of cloud.

Then, once I got to work and we were starting on the project that required my presence a bit early, I noticed the sunrise forming up behind The Store.
