A Random Wednesday Conversation Starter

I’ve been making my own trail mix of late, with various combinations of nuts and dried fruit. My current mix consists of salted almonds and unsalted walnuts mixed with dried dates, cranberries, and pineapple. Now, I’m not a big fan of pineapple in general, but the dried stuff is miraculous. I can’t get enough of it, and it tests my self-control.

However, I also throw into the mix when I eat some — I don’t mix it right in, but just add a bit when I dish up some of the trail mix — prunes. This is new to me, and for the life of me, after eating a few prunes each day for about a week, I cannot decide if I like the things or not.

Do you folks like prunes?

    I love grapes and I love raisins. I love plums so I should like prunes, but honestly… meh. Maybe if they were dried and in a trail mix I would be more excited about it. Your trail mix sounds good.

    I don't know. I haven't eaten a prune in decades. I think my grandmother made me try one when I was five. I can't remember what it tasted like.

    When I was very young, I decided I disliked prunes, and resolved never to try them. To this day I have stuck to that resolve.

    I absolutely love them and in fact I'm going to buy some now because reading this has given me a craving.
    There are huge differences in prunes, though. Some are really dry and even I find them kind of meh, but other brands are juicy and tasty. The only thing I absolutely hate is when the stone wasn't removed but only shattered and I end up with a mouthful of prune-goo with sharp splinters. Ew.

    I like prunes very much, but there seems to be a wide disparity in texture and flavor, depending on what brand you get. I can't think of the brand name right now, but there's a kind I buy at Costco — it might even be the in-house "Kirkland" brand, now that I think about it — whose prunes are fat and juicy and sweet, almost like they're not as fully dehydrated as other varieties. They're delicious.

    They're also kind of messy… sticky. I can't imagine putting them in trail mix for that reason. I always have to wash my hands after eating them.

    Love them. Try using diced prunes in apple cake or spice cake. Apples, prunes and cinnamon go together really well in just about any combination.

    (If you like plums, you like prunes. Prunes are just a freestone cultivar of plums. Similar to peaches and nectarines: nectarines are a fuzz-less mutation of peaches. I think prunes get a bad rap because they're good for your digestion.)
