Nasty? Perish the thought! They are a rare and delicate… nay, precious… gift from the bosom of the ocean to us mere mortals on the shore.
EEEWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!
Dietary issues aside, I don't think that I'd eat something whose seeming raison d'etre is filtering sea water for nutrients.
'Twas a brave man who ate the first raw oyster
I do love them raw but I especially love them done Rockefeller style.
Tasty enough, though I could take or leave 'em.
The latter. I've watched others eat them with obvious delight; I can't even imagine a scenario in which I could try one.

I did far, far too many dissections of clams and mussels as a grad student teaching assistant teaching Intro Bio to ever be able to eat anything like that.
I start thinking about all the gonads and livers and what-not in the unfortunate little critter and get totally grossed out.
Deep fried clam "strips," however, I am totally down with.
